Months ago, about the time that I started this blog, I had a weird dream that was hard to explain, and the details of the dream faded quickly. I wrote down the main concept of the dream before I forgot it. A group of kids were kidnapped and given new identities. I was sure that I would be able to make this idea into a book, or even a series of books. I choose to take my time writing out details. I wanted to write character descriptions, backstories and have an outline prepared before I officially started writing the story out. This proved to be too difficult for me. I lost focus since I also needed to keep up on writing stories to post each week. But I couldn’t get this idea out of my head. The writer’s block I have had hasn’t helped any because “Amy” the main character of this story just wanted to tell her story. So, I threw my whole plan out the window of planning everything out and I just started writing. Before I knew it, I had the first rough draft of the first two chapters. I have decided to share this first draft with you. No updated versions will ever be posted, but I plan on putting in detail later on that will take this from armature story to a novel worth trying to publish. I hope you enjoy this for now though. I will post chapters as they are written.
The rest of the week passed without incident. Amy found herself in the guest room of the ruby household cleaning after they left earlier that day. She was checking the dresser drawers when she found a piece of paper that seemed to be some sort of report. Upon closer inspection it seemed to be the last page of a briefing of a raid done by the army. Amy quickly folded it tight and put it in her pocket. Emily hadn’t grabbed Amy again to finish explaining what that room was for, or who Caleb or the rest of them were. Amy hadn’t seen them in the house all week, so she surmised that they were not servants to the household. Though she couldn’t remember enough of the hall or the room to begin to guess how they were getting in and out.
Amy had caught herself hoping there was a way out. She didn’t know what “out” would look like. But not having to have people look at you like dirt, or not looking at you at all, would be a nice start. She wishes she knew what that group wanted, how big they were and why they wanted to bring Amy in on their secret.
Just after dinner that night Amy was finishing up in the last guest room when she heard a whistling sound coming from the bathroom. Amy checked the hallway before closing the door and walking into the bathroom. There she found Caleb sticking his head out of the linen closet. Amy was surprised to see him. But on the other hand, maybe not. Caleb showed Amy yet another path to that spiral staircase.
At the bottom Emily and Madison were waiting for them.
“Good you made it.” Calab said as he opened the door again. The surveillance room looked just the same now as it did last week. There were a few more chairs than before which meant everyone had a place to sit. Calab turned to face the three girls.
“Thank you for coming, it’s time that you get the facts of where you are. What we are doing and what we would like you to do.” Calab looked around at the monitors and the people watching them. “My name is Caleb and I run the South Carolina sector of the rebellion. We brought in Emily about six months ago just before she became head maid to help with recruiting. She has recently brought in the two of you so that we can have more eyes and ears here at Crimson Manor.” He paused there and looked at one of the monitors again. Emily picked up where he left off.
“The rebellion is still new itself. Started only a year ago. The long-term goal is to help the US government to reclaim what has been theirs for centuries. But currently we are just trying to figure out who the key players are. And what we could do to bring them down. We also need to find and establish safe houses for those that need to hide from the king and others and find a way to get them out.” Emily said vary matter of fact.
“Wait, so we can’t get out yet?” Madison asked “that’s what I said I wanted. I told you I lived in Montana and was just visiting some cousins. When I tried to leave I couldn’t. even though I had proof that I lived in Montana. I want to go home.”
“I know.” Calab said trying to look sympathetic. “We just don’t have contact information for anyone yet to be sure to protect anyone who does make it across the river. I promise that you will be part of the first wave when we can. However, I hope you willing to help in the meantime.”
“Fine I will, but I want out of this house as fast as possible. Lilliam is still trying to get her brothers to…” Madison trailed off looking over at me. Though it doesn’t take much imagination now to figure out what happened to her those three days she was gone.
“We will do our best, Haylee.” Emily said. “With that being said what we want you both to do is to try and find as much information as you can about what Lord Crimson is doing. I will be putting the two of you on the rotation to serve him while he is working. Then report back as soon as you can.”
“How?” Amy asks. “I don’t know who to trust. What if we have something, I don’t know when a good time is to tell you or who else I would be able to.”
Amy couldn’t help but feel like this is a lot of vague promises for the number of risks she would be taking.
“You can also talk to Calvin. He and I have a way to communicate to those down here to safely get you away.”
Amy and Haylee looked at each other both trying to see if the other knew who Calvin was. Calab sees this and clarifies that is Bennette’s, the head butler, real name. but he also says that no one else has yet been brought in. Which means that Amy and Haylee shouldn’t be giving anything away.
“Okay we have about 20 mins before the family is due back. Does anyone have any other questions?” Calab asks after a glance at his watch. Amy decides that this is the best chance she will have. She pulls the page from the report out of her shirt, and hands it to Caleb.
“I found this in Lord Ruby’s room today after everyone had left. I didn’t know what to do with it.” Amy can see the satisfaction on Caleb’s face.
“This is exactly the kind of thing we want to know about. Thank you Amy.” After that Caleb took her back to the guest room, she had been cleaning.
When she saw Haylee that night in the maid’s quarters Amy had vowed silently to keep a closer eye on her when she was around the Crimson children.
