Faries have invaded our world. Boy did I have a brilliant idea, in my opinion, about how to take this story. I thought back to a story that I had already written and posted and wanted to expand on that story. Though when I got done writing this it was so long that I have decided to split it into two parts. Come back next week to read the rest of this story.
Maribelle was excited to finally be allowed to go explore the new world. Her people had been in this world for a few months now and almost all her friends had been allowed to go gather fear for resources, but she had been deemed not ready. Maribelle gathered just as much as all the other fairies, however she is the future leader. She was created right before their move to this new world. So, Maribelle was only allowed to go now with supervision from Edgar, an elder fairy who was to be on her future council.
These fairies came from another dimension. They had to leave after they had finally killed off every other living creature. These fairies survived off others’ fears. It didn’t matter what the creature was, if it could feel the fairies could gather that fear. Once gathered it became the fairy’s life essence. They did not eat, breathe or even reproduce. Everything they were came from the fear they gathered.
Michael, a human, had always been an imaginative young boy. He believed in monsters, witches, goblins, and all other magical creatures you could think of. But he was also scared of them as well. He did grow out of it as he became a teenager, but they were just replaced by other fears. His mother, Edith, had tried everything she could to help him as he grew up, and currently Michael is on anxiety medicine and in therapy to cope with his fears.
Maribelle liked this world. She could feel the fear radiating from every living thing. The dominant creatures of the land, humans, were feared by every other creature due to their tendency to just take what they thought belonged to them. But the humans were also afraid of each other as well, mostly for the same reason. As Maribelle and Edgar were gathering the fear of some birds in a pond, Maribelle felt a tug of power from a nearby human dwelling. Edgar was hesitant about going to investigate. Humans were not yet aware of them, and the tribes were gathering enough fear from the other creatures to last quite some time. Maribelle was preparing to reunite the tribes that got separated in the move from their previous dimension. But Edgar also needed to see what powers Maribelle possessed, so he agreed to let her follow her instinct.
Michael woke from a nightmare. His mother always told him he would grow out of those too, but they were still a nightly occurrence. And the panic attacks that followed lasted almost an hour each. He reached over for his medicine hoping to get ahead of the attack. That’s when he started to hear whispering. It started out in the distance and seemed to be moving closer. He couldn’t make out what was being said, it was so quiet. When it sounded like it was at the window, Michael tried his breathing exercises to help calm his mind. But the whispering was just becoming stronger, not louder to be understandable, but like it was getting in his head better. Finally, he let out a scream that woke the whole house. And the panic attack lasted until dawn.
As the sun was rising, Maribelle smiled triumphantly. She indicated to Edgar that it was time to return to the tribe. Edgar had never seen the amount of fear come out of one being as just had this human. The two fairies returned to their tribe, Maribelle sent messengers out to the other tribes stating that she would be ready to ascend soon. She told them to start preparing for travel, because she wanted to reunite soon.
For the next month Maribelle sent five fairies a night to the human dwelling to gather fear. The rest of the fairies were to gather as normal or prepare for the reunion. Each night the five fairies came with news that the human boy’s fear was growing and so was the older woman’s. It was time to start scouting locations for them to live. With the number of humans and other creatures in this world they could be here for millennium. Being discreet would be the best move.
Edith was at her wits end. Every night Michael woke up screaming. He just kept saying that he could hear them. That they wouldn’t leave him alone. It got to the point that the medicine wasn’t even helping anymore. If she took him back to the doctor, she was afraid they would lock him up. Edith looked at Michael during dinner that night and saw the deep circles under his eyes. She thought they needed a change of scenery for a while. That island off the shore belonged to her, and Michael used to love going there. She suggested the trip and Michael agreed hoping that maybe he could find some sleep there.
A day later they packed up their supplies on the boat. The island had a house in a big clearing close to the center of the island. Her grandfather had built it when he purchased the island. The family made sure that it was kept up and even updated as needed. Michael could feel an excitement building that hadn’t been there in a long time. Edith knew this was the right thing to do. It might not fix his problems, but it would give him some peace.
When they arrived at the island. Michael took a deep breath of fresh air. He was so tired he wanted to go straight for a nap, but he knew his mother needed help with the supplies. They unloaded the boat and took everything to the house. Michael loved this house because it had so much space in the clearing that he used to run for hours. All the rooms were spaces, and the island was home to lots of different small animals. He, and his cousins when they visited as well, would hike all day and always have something new and beautiful to look at. When it was time for bed that night Michael took his medicine and fell asleep with the cool air from the water blowing in through the window.
In a week’s time Michael was back to his old self. He was free from the terror he had been succumbing to. The whispering had stopped, though he was still having his old nightmares, those had been manageable. He finally felt free. His mother said they could spend a month here. He planned on enjoying every minute of it.
